HOME Arabesques By Asya Nemchenok Russia is an old country where western and east culture are mixed magically. Saint Petersburg, my native city, represents many islands of human cultures. Joined by the magic channels and canals of the Neva are marvelous cathedrals constructed by Italian, French, German architects; a mosque, Catholic churches, Protestants, orthodox. These photos I have named "Arabesques" and I have interpreted freely Russian themes of eastern culture. "All the world is a theatre... " said Shakespeare. Continuing this concept I like to photograph people in performance of life. Many people, relatives, friends and close neighbors assist in the execution. I carefully prepare the scenes and process the film. Then I paint on the negative, freely, mixing thus the arts of painting and photography. I draw manually on the 35mm film negative and have named this my method "photopainting." Frequently my photos bring to life angels, nymphs... and characters mythological.
